I Can

Behind The Song

It was one of those days you wake up with a song on your lips and you know God is encouraging you. This was how this song came about. For the most part the song has to be fleshed out since most of the lyrics were forgotten except the verse. Some details were lost but not the theme. While the song is to my encouragement I want to also use the song for instruction.

Philippians 4:13 did not come to us as a tool for motivation just for motivation's sake, considering our usage of the scripture. Read in context, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." does not mean you can literally do everything and anything, it does not mean you are now omnipotent but it does mean that you can bear all things. It means you can endure all things. It means, in the very word of Paul:
"Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. " Philippians 4:11-12
Now you know exactly what the song "I Can" is about. It is both to encourage the listener and to properly orient the reader or the reciter of the popular scripture, its context.

The Lyrics

Verse

I can do anything
through Christ Who gives me strength
I can do anything
through Christ Who lives in me

Chorus

For my cup is running over,
running over with you
For my cup is running over,
running over with you

Bridge
I can
I'm well able
to do what's right
I'm capable
to do your will
whether great or small
to scale any wall
no matter how tall
